Nearly every person who works the shop floor with me agrees the autumn dress is the best thing that happens to a wardrobe all year, cotton or linen weight, long sleeve, the kind of thing you can wear with sandals in September and boots by Halloween without buying a single new thing. One person disagrees completely and thinks the whole category is a trap, and honestly, some mornings, I get it.

Here’s the case for it, since I’m on that side most days. It’s the only dress that doesn’t need a jacket negotiation. You know the one, standing in the doorway deciding if it’s a cardigan day or a real coat day, and an autumn dress in the right weight just skips that whole argument. I’ve got one in a rust color that’s done a work day, a dinner, and once, badly, a funeral, because it was the only clean dark thing in my closet and I felt weird about it the whole service.

The holdout’s argument is the ironing. She says the second you wash it, that crisp fall of the fabric is gone forever and you’re now the proud owner of a wrinkled sack you have to fight every single week, and she is not wrong, exactly, she’s just fighting a battle I stopped fighting years ago. I throw mine in the dryer for ten minutes and call it good. She irons. She says I look like I slept in mine. I have, on occasion, slept in mine, so.

What actually got a dress cut from my picks this year had nothing to do with color or print, it was what happened after wash three.

One looked exactly like the photo. One shrank an inch at the hem and now sits weird at the knee like it’s embarrassed to be there. One, and I loved this dress, pilled under the arms so bad by October it looked like it had a small allergic reaction. Gone. Straight to the donation bag, no ceremony.

The one I’m most nervous recommending is a burnt orange midi with a collar that’s a little bit prairie, a little bit “am I in a period drama.” It’s not for everyone, my coworker tried it on and said she felt like she should be churning butter, but on the right person, it’s the best thing in this whole roundup, so I’m not pretending it’s a safe pick for every body and every taste, because it isn’t.

So yeah, near everyone here would tell you to buy an autumn dress without hesitation, and one of us would tell you to buy the iron first. I’m with the majority, mostly because I’ve made peace with looking a little slept in by 3pm, and honestly, most days, so has the dress.
