Six days until my sister’s wedding trip and I’m standing in my own store, on my break, holding a brown shirt top that has nothing to do with swimwear, because I needed something to throw over a suit that wasn’t going to scream “I panicked at the airport gift shop.” Brown does that for me. It’s the color equivalent of saying nothing at a party and somehow being the most interesting person there.
I’ve bought three of these now, which is a stupid number for one category, and they were not the same three dollars. One was from a resort boutique near where I work, priced like it had done something impressive, and it was the exact same weight of fabric as one I got for a third of that at a regular store two months earlier, no special finish, no reason for the gap except a nicer hanger and a view of the water. THAT one made me actually laugh out loud in the fitting room, alone, which is a specific kind of unhinged. Meanwhile the cheapest of the three, the one I almost skipped because it felt thin between my fingers, turned out to be the one that survived actual wear, salt air and all, without going see through or clingy in weird spots.

On a warm day it does something nice, it sits away from your skin instead of sticking, so you’re not peeling it off your shoulders every ten minutes like a t shirt after a boardwalk walk. On a chilly evening, say the boat back from a sunset thing, it’s not doing much for you honestly, and I’ve regretted not grabbing a real layer more than once. I counted one trip where I put it on and took it off nine times in six days, over a swimsuit, over a slip dress, tied at the waist, unbuttoned like a jacket, and it never once looked like it was having an identity crisis about it, which is more than I can say for me by day four.

Here’s the part that gets argued about at the shop, and it comes up every single time someone reaches for one in this color. Half of us think brown is the neutral that saves you from ever overthinking an outfit again, works with white, works with olive, works with a bad tan line you’re pretending isn’t there. The other half think it reads a little flat under bad lighting, a little too “sensible aunt,” and needs gold or a print nearby to not disappear entirely. I’ve been on both sides depending on the week.
I’ll say the honest thing. On someone with warmer undertones this color looks expensive doing nothing. On someone cooler it can look like you got dressed in a hurry using only what was clean. That’s not a flaw in the top, that’s just true, and I’d rather tell you now than let you find out under fitting room lighting three days before a flight, because I’ve watched that exact realization happen too many times to count.
