I refreshed the same three resale searches for a burgundy backpack for about six weeks, which tells you this thing was a real hunt and not a casual browse, and once I finally landed one, every single person I showed it to agreed it was the right call. Every person except one, who thinks burgundy backpacks are a trap dressed up as a personality choice, and honestly I can’t fully argue her down even though I’d buy mine again tomorrow.

Here’s the case for it. At nine in the morning it reads like you made an actual decision about your outfit instead of grabbing whatever was clean, which a plain black backpack has never once done for me in eleven years of owning plain black backpacks. It sits against a camel coat or a gray blazer like it was invited on purpose. And at five, after a full day of being crammed under a desk and kicked slightly by my own foot more times than I want to count, it still looks like the same decision.

That’s the actual test. Not how it photographs at ten a.m. by a window, how it survives to happy hour without looking like it gave up around lunch.

The one dissenting friend says the color reads completely differently depending on the hour, and she’s not wrong, that’s the gamble part I’ll admit upfront. In daylight it’s rich, almost wine colored, looks intentional and a little expensive. Under office fluorescents or streetlights it can slide into a shade close enough to black that people ask if it’s black, which defeats some of the point of buying a burgundy one in the first place. I checked mine under three different lighting situations in one week like I was running an authentication check, which, fine, is exactly the kind of thing I do to bags, I just don’t usually have to do it for the color.

The keys situation I will not defend. Every burgundy bag I’ve owned has an interior lining in some shade that makes a set of dark keys vanish completely, and I have stood on a sidewalk digging through mine with my whole arm in it while a coworker watched and said nothing, which was somehow worse than if she’d laughed.

So the near unanimous verdict stands, buy the burgundy, it does more work than black without trying as hard as a bright color would, and the one holdout can keep her skepticism about the lighting because she’s not wrong about that part either, she’s just outvoted. I’d still pick mine off a resale listing again at eleven p.m. on a Tuesday, checking the stitching before I even looked at the price, because that’s the order my priorities come in and I’ve made peace with it.
