A guy I was seeing, briefly, in that phase of dating where you’re still performing having your life together, looked at the three pairs by my door and said, “why do you own three of the same boot,” and I genuinely could not answer him in a way that made me sound sane. That relationship did not survive, for unrelated reasons, but the question stuck around longer than he did, because he wasn’t wrong, he just didn’t understand that they’re not the same boot, they’re three different chapters of the same argument I’ve been having with my own feet since 2019.

The case for the chelsea boot, on paper, is airtight. No laces to deal with at six forty in the morning, a shape that reads as put together on a video call from the knee up, which is most of what a video call actually judges you on, and a silhouette that survives Boston sidewalk salt in a way my suede loafers never forgave me for. That’s the spreadsheet version. The real version is that I bought my first pair because I’d had a bad week and wanted to feel like a person who owns exactly one good boot, and then I kept buying more because apparently one good boot was never going to be the end of it.

The pair getting all the wear right now is a stiff leather one I hated for the first ten days, properly hated, blister on the back of my left heel the size of a nickel that I documented for a coworker like it was a workplace injury claim.

I almost returned them. I did not, out of stubbornness more than confidence, and by week three the leather had given up fighting me and now they’re the ones I reach for on the days I have back to back meetings and no time to think about my feet at all, which, for a boot, is the actual job.

The gamble pick, the one I’ll admit is not for everyone, is a pair with an elastic panel dyed to nearly disappear into the leather, sleek in a way that looks incredible on the right ankle and slightly like orthopedic footwear on mine, and I still haven’t fully decided which side of that line I land on. I wear them anyway, mostly out of spite toward my own indecision.

The pair I regret is the one I bought because it looked exactly like a much more expensive pair, and it does, right up until you sit in it for six hours, at which point the sole starts making a sound I can only describe as a complaint. I budgeted for better and got a noise instead.

So no, they’re not the same boot. He just wasn’t looking closely enough, which, frankly, tracks.
