I own two denim jumpsuits that basically hate each other, and by that I mean I hate one and would be buried in the other. The first one, dark wash, snaps up the front like a mechanic’s coverall, I bought at 9pm on a Tuesday because an influencer wore it standing perfectly still on a beach, no wind, no sitting down involved in the entire video. Mine has been sat down in. Mine has done a car ride. The torso on that thing fits like it was drafted for a person with no ribs, and I have ribs, I checked, so every time I bought it I ended up either strangled through the chest or billowing everywhere else like I was smuggling a beach towel. That is the whole denim jumpsuit problem in one garment, honestly, one size deciding to fit your shoulders and just guessing about the rest of you.

The other one is lighter, softer, been through enough washes that it’s gone slightly gray at the knees in a way that looks intentional even though it’s just aging, and that’s the one I actually reach for. It took about six wears to stop feeling like cardboard, which nobody tells you going in, you buy it stiff and a little smug looking and then it slowly turns into something that moves like a regular pair of jeans, which is the whole trick of denim and also the whole test of patience.

Had someone in the shop last month who wanted the exact snap front coverall style because she saw it on someone half a foot shorter with a completely different rib situation, and I didn’t stop her, I just said bring it back if the chest fights you, and she did, two days later, chest had won.

On a warm day the good one is fine, not exactly breathable in the way people mean when they say that about linen, but it doesn’t cling, and there’s a version of a Miami afternoon where I’ll take slightly hot over slightly damp any day. The bad one turns into a sauna by 2pm and I’ve stood in it sweating through a shift regretting a decision made under bad lighting on my phone.

I’m not going to pretend this is a safe pick for everyone, a jumpsuit is a full outfit commitment, if the torso’s wrong there’s no belt or blazer fixing it, you’re just wrong all day. But the soft gray one earns its spot back in rotation every single summer, and four years in, three washes past when I thought it’d fall apart, it’s the one I’d replace first if it actually did.
