Half of us think a gold corset dress is the single most useful “going out” purchase a person can make. The other half think it’s a Halloween costume that got a better publicist. I sit somewhere in the middle, mostly because I own two, wore one four times and the other exactly once, and the math on that gap is doing a lot of talking.

The one I actually reach for lives in the front of my closet, which at my apartment means it’s within arm’s reach of the door, no digging required. Bought it for thirty four dollars at the place on my corner, the one I check every Tuesday like it’s a part time job, and I’ve worn it to a wedding, a work thing I lied about enjoying, and once just to sit in my kitchen and eat cereal because I liked how it felt. Four wears, thirty four dollars, that’s eight fifty a wear, which I said out loud to my mom and she just asked if I was going to actually leave the house in it or keep doing this.

Fair.

The other one is the gamble I have to admit to. Bright gold, boning you can see through the fabric if the light hits it wrong, the kind of dress that looks incredible on exactly the person it was designed for and slightly like a prop on everyone else, myself included some days. I bought it anyway. I knew before I paid that it wasn’t really me, wrong shine, wrong occasion, wrong entire closet if I’m honest, but it was eighteen dollars and I told myself I’d figure out where to wear it later. I still haven’t, not properly.

One wear so far, to a birthday dinner where I spent the whole night adjusting the front, which brings me to the part nobody tells you.

The ironing situation is genuinely a dread. You can’t just run an iron over boning, you end up steaming it in sections like you’re negotiating with it, and I have stood in my kitchen at eleven at night doing exactly that before a wedding I was already running late for. First wash on the cheap one and it came out with the shape slightly softer than before, not ruined, just less confident, like it had been told bad news. The good one held its structure through two washes, which is honestly the only reason it’s still getting worn.

So here’s where I land, and it’s not a clean verdict. If you’re going to own one, own the version that survives your actual closet and your actual laundry day, not the one that photographs best on somebody else’s Tuesday. Mine’s up to five wears now between the two, and I’m still deciding if that counts as a win.
