Here’s how my opinion on the gold shoulder bag has moved over the years. There was a stretch where I thought it was a costume piece, something you wore once to a wedding and then let sit in a drawer feeling vaguely embarrassing, like a fascinator. Then there was a stretch where every single influencer on my feed had one and I decided that meant I needed one too, urgently, at full price, which is not a sentence I say often. Now I’ve landed somewhere in the middle, which is the least interesting place to land but probably the most honest one.
The bag that actually taught me anything is the one I’ve worn until it looks a little sad. Fourteen dollars at the place on the corner I check every Tuesday, and I have worn it enough times that the strap has a permanent twist in it from sitting on my shoulder the same way every day.

That’s the one I trust, not because it’s precious, because it’s been through it. It’s gone out in the rain twice, no umbrella either time, and the metallic finish didn’t flake or go patchy, which genuinely surprised me because I fully expected to come home looking like I’d been dipped in craft glitter.
It’s also survived the 7:40 train, which is the real test for anything I own. Packed in, elbow to elbow, bag getting squashed between my hip and a stranger’s backpack, and it came out fine, no crease that stuck around. Dropped it on a bar floor once too, kicked slightly by someone walking past, picked it back up and there wasn’t a mark on it. Three weeks of actual wear in and the gold still looks gold, not that dull pewter thing cheap metallics do when the coating starts giving up.

Cost per wear on this one, I did the math twice because the first number felt too good.

Worn it around nineteen times since spring. Fourteen dollars divided by nineteen is under a dollar. Under a dollar a wear for something that photographs like it cost real money is, frankly, obscene, and I’m not sorry about it.
I’ll say the honest thing though, because not every gold bag earns that math. I bought a second one, a bigger one, more of a statement, and it just sits there. Wrong shape for my actual days, too much bag for a coffee run, and I knew that walking out of the store and bought it anyway because the price was good. That’s the gamble version, the one that suits somebody with a different life than mine, somebody going more places that call for a statement. Mine’s the small one, the daily one, the one that’s a little scuffed now and somehow better for it.

[…] I won’t pretend this is for everyone. On the wrong person, in the wrong light, gold reads costume rather than coat, and I’ve seen it happen to a perfectly nice woman at a wedding who looked like she’d wandered off a parade float. It works on people who already dress a little bit loud. If that’s not you, this isn’t the color teaching you to be loud. It’s just going to sit there being gold at you until you take it back. […]
