Everyone treats a gold tank top like a going out top, one wear, one photo, back in the drawer for eight months, and I’m just going to say it, that’s a waste of a perfectly good piece of gold. I did it too, for years, bought one for a friend’s engagement party in 2022, wore it exactly once under a blazer I took off after twenty minutes because it was hot, and then it sat there until I found it again doing a closet clean out and had genuinely forgotten I owned it.

The one that actually earned its spot cost me forty two dollars off a resale app, and I know that number specifically because I check my own order history the way other people check their bank balance, compulsively and with dread. That one has been worn eleven times since March. Under a cardigan to the office, alone on a Friday, once to a wedding where I got a text from across the room that just said “the top” with no other words, which is the correct review format honestly. That’s a piece that’s paid for itself several times over and I’m not being dramatic about it.

The other one I own is a completely different animal and I’ll admit it upfront, it’s a gamble.

It’s a heavier, almost metallic gold, borderline armor looking, and it only works on a body doing a very specific thing that night, confident, a little bit much, not trying to blend into a group photo. I bought it after refreshing a resale listing so many times I actually said out loud “you’re not going to drop the price, are you, you never do,” and then it dropped, and I bought it in about four seconds without thinking it through. I’ve worn it twice. Both times I looked incredible for about an hour and then wanted to go home.

Here’s the part nobody mentions when they treat this like a novelty item. Under flash it goes almost white gold, washes out completely, loses the depth entirely, so if your plan is photos in a dark room this isn’t the top, you want warmer bulbs or you’re wasting the color. Under office lighting, the good one holds its tone properly, still reads gold, not sad beige, which is honestly the real test because fluorescent light is brutal and unforgiving to basically everything.

So one lives in rotation, one is waiting for an occasion that keeps not showing up, and I refuse to get rid of it out of pure stubbornness, because I remember exactly how hard I worked to get it, and apparently that’s still not a good enough reason to keep something, and I’m keeping it anyway.
