Everyone treats gold studs like a decision you make once and never again, buy a pair in your twenties, put them in, forget about them for a decade, and that’s just wrong, that’s not how earrings work and I’m tired of pretending otherwise on behalf of people who won’t say it themselves.

Nine days until I fly out for a wedding and I still haven’t decided which studs are coming, which is absurd because they’re the size of a lentil and take up zero suitcase space, but the decision matters more than the space does. Hair’s going up for the ceremony, down for everything after, and that’s the whole test right there. Up, they’ve got nowhere to hide, every bit of shine is on display next to your actual ear, no earlobe witness protection. Down, half of them vanish into your hair for six hours and you forget you’re wearing jewelry at all, which some days is exactly the point.

The pair that let me down cost more than I want to admit and had a shine so aggressive it looked like a tiny disco ball whenever I turned my head under fluorescent light, fine for a wedding, deeply unserious for a Tuesday staff meeting where I caught the ceiling lights bouncing off my own ear during someone’s slideshow.

Had a customer in last month asking for “the shiniest ones you’ve got” for a work trip and I gently steered her elsewhere, because daytime shine has a ceiling and that pair blew right through it.

The ones that actually earned their spot are quieter than you’d expect, a softer gold that catches light instead of throwing it, and I wore them five days straight, shower, gym, one questionable nap with my head on a plane pillow, and they never once looked like they’d had a rough week. That’s the whole review, honestly, less about the shine and more about whether they still look decent on day five without you doing anything to maintain them.

I’ll admit one pair here is a gamble, a slightly bigger stud that photographs beautifully and reads as a little much in person if your ears are on the smaller side, my sister tried mine on for a “just to see” and immediately looked like she was auditioning for something.

Not a universal win. Some faces carry a bigger stud fine, some don’t, and nobody tells you that part before you buy.

Nine days out and I still think the boring metal test wins, hold it up, see if it looks like a decision or an accident. Everyone treating studs as a one time purchase is still wrong, but at least now I’ve got proof.
