Nine days until the flight and I’m standing in my own kitchen holding a gold vest top up to the light like I’m appraising jewelry, because that’s basically what it is once you factor in what some of these cost.

Here’s the thing about gold vest tops, and I mean this as someone who has watched shop floor opinion on this exact item swing back and forth for the better part of a decade. A few years ago nobody wanted them, they read costume-y, like you’d raided a going out top from 2009 and were hoping nobody noticed. Then suddenly everyone wanted one, the shine got reclassified as “daytime appropriate,” and now I’ve got customers asking for gold vest tops to wear to brunch with the same energy they used to reserve for asking about a little black dress. The category didn’t change. The room’s opinion of it did, and it did it twice in ten years, which is a lot of flip flopping for a top with no sleeves.

The underwear question is the one nobody warns you about until you’re under fitting room lighting realizing every seam of your regular bra is now visible in a fabric that reflects like a car bumper. I’ve had women in the shop nearly in tears over this, convinced the top was broken, it wasn’t, the top was just honest. A nude seamless bra fixes about eighty percent of the problem. The other twenty percent is just accepting that anything with this much shine is going to pick up every shadow and every strap, and either you dress around that or you don’t wear it under bright light.

The shine itself is the real fork in the road.

Under sun it throws light back at people, I’ve seen it catch a reflection off a pool and land directly in someone’s eyes three tables over, which is either delightful or a menace depending on your mood that day. Worn at night under low light it settles down into something that actually looks expensive even when it wasn’t. Worn at 11am under fluorescent airport lighting it looks like you’re headed to a shift at a very confusing restaurant.

The one that earned its price with me got worn six separate times over one trip, under a blazer, alone, tucked, untucked, and never once looked tired. The one that never got past night two just sat in the suitcase looking sad and slightly too shiny for the room it was in.

I’ll say the honest part out loud, this is not a safe pick for everybody. It suits someone who already likes being looked at a little. If that’s not you most days, buy the top anyway and save it for the one day it is.
