I built a case for a green mini bag the way I’d build a case for reallocating a client’s fixed income exposure, which is to say with far more conviction than the actual stakes warranted. The pitch to myself was simple: a small bag in a color that isn’t black forces the rest of the outfit to be less boring, cost per wear improves because I’m not defaulting to the same navy tote every single day, and green photographs well on camera, unlike burgundy, which I’ve learned reads as a sad brown on every laptop webcam I own. That was the whole spreadsheet. It held up for about four days.

What actually got me to check out was smaller and dumber than any of that. It was a specific shade, somewhere between olive and the color of a bottle of Perrier, and it looked like it would go with exactly one thing I owned, which should have been a warning and instead felt like a reason to buy it immediately.

Here is where the standing disagreement comes back, and it comes back because of the strap. I like a bag I can wear crossbody through a full commute and two client meetings without thinking about it. The woman two desks over thinks a crossbody strap on anything this small looks like I’m carrying a passport pouch, and she’s said so, more than once, usually right as I’m adjusting it in the elevator. We have never resolved this. I don’t think we’re going to.

Four months in, the bag has done fine, better than fine on the corners, worse than expected on the bottom, which picked up a faint gray scuff from being set on an office floor during a meeting that ran forty minutes over. Nothing a bit of polish didn’t mostly fix. It still looks like a decision, not a mistake, which is more than I can say for the tan one I bought two summers ago that turned the color of a manila folder by October.

Where it earns its spot: over a black blazer, over a cream sweater, next to denim on a Saturday, all of which sounds like the kind of claim I’d usually make someone prove, so I’ll say I wore all three in one actual week and the green held up as the interesting part of the outfit each time. Where it falls apart completely is anywhere near another green, near most brights, and near my one burgundy coat, which together look like a costume for a play nobody wrote.

I’ll be honest that this is the gamble pick of the closet, not the safe one. It suits someone who already has a lot of neutral basics and wants one loud decision sitting in the middle of them. If your closet is already colorful, skip it, you don’t need the argument I’m still having with the woman two desks over.
