Everyone I know treats a green satin top like it only comes out for weddings and one specific cousin’s engagement party, and honestly that annoys me, because I bought mine to wear to a Tuesday client meeting and got more compliments than I’ve ever gotten wearing an actual blazer. Nobody defended the wedding-only rule when I brought it up, they just sort of nodded like I’d said something obvious, and I’ve decided that’s worse than an argument. It means everyone quietly agrees satin is for occasions and I’m apparently the only one dragging it into a regular week.

The color did most of the work honestly. Deep bottle green, not the mossy sad green, and it looks expensive under any light that isn’t a fitting room fluorescent, which is its whole personality problem too. Satin shows everything.

I wore mine to a rooftop thing in July and you could see the exact outline of where my bag strap sat for four hours, like a little brand on a cow. I looked incredible from the front and slightly tragic from the back, and nobody told me until I saw the photos.

After two washes, mine started doing this thing at the neckline where the seam gets a faint permanent crease, like it remembers being folded a certain way even after you iron it flat. Not ruined, just tired looking, the way a good bra looks after its third year. I’ve made peace with it because I wear this top a lot, more than I planned to when I bought it, and things you actually wear are supposed to show it a little.

I will say the water spot thing is not a myth someone made up to sell you a dry cleaning membership. One drop of tap water on satin dries into a dark little map that stays visible under any light bright enough to matter, which is most lights. I’ve learned to just accept a slightly damp napkin situation exists in my future every time I wear it out.

This is not a top for someone who needs to forget what they’re wearing for eight hours straight. If you fidget, if you’re the type who leans on tables and doesn’t notice, this will find you out every single time and then sit there catching the light so everyone else notices too. I love it anyway, but I’m not going to pretend it’s the safe, forgettable choice, it’s the opposite of forgettable, that’s sort of the whole point and also the whole risk.

I still think it belongs on a random Wednesday more than it belongs at a wedding. I just also think I’m the only one currently willing to say that out loud.
