My brother came through Seattle in December, saw the green velvet dress hanging on my closet door where it’s lived untouched since I bought it, and asked why I owned “a theater curtain.” That’s the whole review right there, and it’s stuck with me for two months because I can’t fully argue with it.

I bought that one on impulse at eleven at night, deep green, floor length, the kind of thing that looks incredible on a hanger and then somehow different on an actual body under actual kitchen lighting. I’ve worn it once. It’s a gamble dress, I’ll say that upfront, it wants a specific occasion and a specific person who isn’t self conscious about moving through a room slowly because that’s the only speed velvet that heavy allows. If you’re not that person, it sits on the hanger. Mine has receipts.

The one that actually earns its space came from my mom, who handed it down after wearing it to exactly one wedding in 2019 and deciding it wasn’t her color. Knee length, a little more forest than emerald, and it’s been to three dinners, one work thing, and a birthday where someone asked where I got it and I had to explain it technically belonged to my mother first. That’s the sensible pick that turned into the favorite, which happens more than the impulse ones like to admit.

Length is where this category either works for you or actively works against you. Knee length, no problem, you can walk fast, get in a car, sit through dinner without doing the thing where you keep checking the hem hasn’t hiked up. Floor length is a different relationship entirely. It’s beautiful standing still and a genuine liability the second you’re outside the house, on stairs, near a curb, anywhere with foot traffic. I caught the hem of mine on a subway grate once and heard the sound before I felt it, small tear, completely my fault, completely predictable if I’d thought about where I was actually going to wear it instead of how it looked in my bathroom mirror.

Fabric wise it’s forgiving in the way that matters, it doesn’t crease from being balled up in a bag the way I’ve balled mine up more than once, and it hides a spilled drink better than anything lighter would, which I know because someone’s wine met my sleeve at that birthday and nobody noticed until I mentioned it later. That’s really the whole case for it. Not that it’s easy, because the length keeps it from being effortless, but that when it’s the right length for what you’re actually doing that night, it holds up better than the fancy thing usually does.
