Okay so my roommate’s boyfriend was over last week, saw me trying on aqua mini dress number three of the afternoon, and said “wait, you own more than one of those?” like it was a personality diagnosis. I do. I own four. He was visiting from Dallas and clearly does not understand that “aqua” is not one color, it is a whole mood spectrum from “pool day” to “I need everyone at this wedding to see me from across the venue,” and I need a dress for each version of that mood, that’s just science.

But he said something else that stuck, which is that the one I had on looked “kind of like a costume,” and I hate that he wasn’t completely wrong. The really saturated, shiny aqua ones photograph incredible, like genuinely they pop off a phone screen in a way beige never will, but in person, in daylight, walking from the car to a restaurant, you can feel people’s eyes doing a double take that isn’t always the good kind.

That one’s a gamble. It’s for a specific person having a specific main character day, not for someone trying to blend into brunch.

The matte ones are the ones I actually reach for though. There’s a difference between a dress that performs on camera and a dress that survives your actual Tuesday, and the matte aqua mini I keep coming back to has done both a work happy hour and a rooftop thing in the same week, no ironing, no drama, and nobody in the group chat said a single word about it which for us is the highest compliment possible, silence means it worked.

Wind is the real enemy of this whole category and I will die saying this. I wore one of the shorter ones to an outdoor concert and spent the entire opening act doing the one handed skirt hold while trying to look casual about it, which, spoiler, I did not look casual. Shorts underneath, non negotiable, I learned that the hard way standing on a set of metal bleacher stairs while a stranger behind me definitely saw more than the ticket price covered.

I was NOT expecting the stairs at my own apartment to be the actual final boss though. Aqua mini plus a step count plus zero handrail equals a very slow, very undignified climb every single time, phone in one hand, dress hem in the other, dignity somewhere in the parking lot.

So here’s where we’ve landed after way too many fittings and one brutally honest guest opinion, buy the loud aqua for the day you want to be seen, buy the matte one for the day you actually have to function in it, and always, always wear shorts.
