I have two black cami tops sitting three inches apart on the same hanger and they could not be more different people. One’s a silk one I found on a resale app at eleven at night for forty dollars because the listing had a typo in the brand name and nobody else searched it right, and it drapes like it’s embarrassed to be touching my body, in a good way, in the way that makes you stand up straighter without deciding to. The other is a slightly heavier jersey one I bought new in a five minute panic before a wedding, and it just sits there. Does its job. Zero drama. I love the silk one more and I wear the jersey one more, and if that sentence bothers you, welcome to my closet.

Here’s the actual argument, and it’s the same one I have with myself every single time I get dressed. The silk one needs to be left out, hem loose, because tucking it turns the whole thing into a slippery mess that untucks itself by 2pm anyway, so why fight it. The jersey one wants to be tucked, and not just tucked, tucked with intention, half in half out if you’re feeling like a person who has plans, fully in if you’re trying to look like you own the meeting. I genuinely did not know a hem could have a personality until I owned both of these back to back.

The surprise nobody warns you about is the strap situation.

The silk one’s straps are basically decorative, they will slide off your shoulder in a boardroom and you will not notice until someone tells you, ask me how I know. The jersey one has a slightly wider strap that stays put and I resented that as boring for exactly one week before I understood it was the entire point.

Now, is black the safe choice or the boring one. I think it’s neither, I think it’s a decoy. Everyone assumes a black cami is the invisible option, the one you buy so you don’t have to think, and then you own two of them and realize they’re not interchangeable at all, they’re just quiet about their differences instead of loud, which is somehow worse to shop for because nothing in the listing photo tells you which personality you’re getting.

The gamble is the silk one, full stop. It shows every single thing underneath it, every seam, every bra strap, it is not a top for someone who wants to disappear into a room. It’s a top for someone who wants to be looked at slightly, on purpose, and I did not know that about myself until I was standing in a work bathroom yanking a strap back into place for the third time and thinking, worth it, actually, completely worth it.
