I have a client who once told me she owned “eleven, maybe twelve” black cardigans, and when I asked her to actually count, it was nineteen. Nineteen. And she wore, by her own honest admission, three of them on rotation while the other sixteen sat there being aspirational. That’s the whole category in one closet. Everybody thinks they need the black cardigan. Almost nobody’s checked whether the one they own is actually good, or just quietly acceptable.

Here’s where the real argument starts, and it’s not about sizing for once, which for me is rare. It’s about taste. Half of what I own leans toward the boxy, slightly severe, almost-blazer version, worn open over everything like armor. I think that’s the correct cardigan. My best friend from styling school thinks that’s a costume for someone auditioning to run a design firm, and she wears the soft, slouchy, cocoon kind that looks like you borrowed it from someone you love. We’ve had this fight for actual years. Neither of us has moved an inch. I still think hers looks unfinished. She still thinks mine looks like I’m about to fire someone.

What I will say plainly, no argument attached, buttons matter more than anyone admits. A cardigan with cheap plastic buttons set too close together gapes right at the chest the second you sit down, and I’ve watched more than one client adjust herself all through a lunch meeting because nobody warned her. The good ones have buttons spaced with actual intention, or better, one substantial closure that does the work of three flimsy ones. Worn open, a black cardigan reads relaxed, in control, like you meant to look like that. Worn closed and gaping, it reads like you got dressed in a hurry and hoped nobody would look directly at your chest. There is no in between with this fabric, it commits one way or the other.

Nobody tells you the other thing either, which is that black cardigans are lint magnets with something to prove. I have a cat and a life, and I own a specific little brush now that lives in my car because I got tired of arriving at client meetings looking dusted in gray fur. If you have a pet, a coat, a couch that sheds, budget five extra minutes before you leave the house.

That’s not a maybe. That’s just Tuesday.

The soft slouchy one is the gamble here, I’ll say it outright. On the right person it looks effortless and a little glamorous. On someone standing stiff in a meeting it looks like she forgot to finish getting dressed. My friend would tell you that’s exactly what makes it good. I still don’t fully believe her. I’ve bought one anyway.
