I had eleven brown belt bags in a resale folder at one point, screenshotted at various hours of the night like evidence for a case nobody asked me to build. That number is not an exaggeration, I counted before I started deleting, and deleting them was its own small grief because every single one had a story attached, a listing I found at 6am on a Tuesday because I have a theory that resellers upload before their coffee kicks in and their pricing brain isn’t fully online yet.

The argument that got this list down to four wasn’t really about the bags. It exposed something else entirely, which is that I want my hands free at all times and one of my closest friends in this hunt genuinely does not, she wants a bag she can dig through, dump a granola bar in, lose her keys inside on purpose almost. She thinks a belt bag is a person avoiding commitment to actually carrying anything. I think a tote is a person who enjoys suffering.

Neither of us has moved an inch on this in over a year and we’ve stopped trying.

The shade thing is real and nobody warns you. I bought one online described as “chestnut” and it arrived reading almost orange under my kitchen light, like it had been sitting too close to a heater.

Sent it back within the return window, no regrets, moved on to a different listing that used the word “cognac” instead, which I’ve learned is resale code for actually warm rather than muddy, and that one has stayed true, no weird green undertone creeping in after four months of wear the way cheaper dye jobs sometimes do.

That one, the cognac one, I’ve worn nearly every day since March. The strap has softened in a way that’s flattering, molded a little to how I actually clip it, and the corners haven’t gone dark or greasy looking despite living against my hip through a Nashville summer, which I was fully bracing for.

I’ll be honest about the gamble pick. There’s a smaller one on my current shortlist, barely holds a phone and a card case, that I bought entirely because I almost lost the listing to someone faster than me, refreshed it three times, got it, and only afterward asked myself if I even needed a bag this small. I didn’t. I wanted it because the win felt good. I still carry it on days I want to feel put together and I still don’t know if that’s the bag talking or just me being competitive with strangers on the internet, which, deep down, I already know the answer to.
