I built a whole cost benefit case for why I didn’t need a bucket hat, given that I already own four baseball caps and a sun visor I’ve worn exactly once, to a company picnic, under duress. Lost the argument to myself in about four minutes standing in a store in the Seaport, which is roughly my track record with anything under sixty dollars.

Here’s where the actual disagreement lives, and it’s been going on long enough now that I don’t think either side is winning: one of us thinks a bucket hat only works oversized, dropped low, the kind of brim you have to tilt your whole head back to see under, borderline antisocial. The other thinks that’s how you end up looking like you’re hiding from a subpoena, and the correct version sits higher and smaller and lets you actually make eye contact with people in a meeting, if you’re unhinged enough to wear one to a meeting, which, for the record, I have done, once, on a Friday when the office had gone business casual to the point of meaninglessness and nobody said a word.

The one I keep grabbing right now is a lightweight cotton twill in an actual color, not another beige, because I already own enough beige to reupholster a small chair, and reaching for the same neutral every single morning was starting to feel less like a style and more like a rut I’d fallen into without noticing. It reads fine on a video call too, which I did check, because I check everything on a video call now, and a hat that turns your whole face into a shadow is not a hat, it’s a liability with a brim.

The packing problem is the real daily drama here, more than anything about how it looks on my head. I ruined the first one I owned by shoving it flat into a suitcase side pocket under a paperback and a phone charger, and it came out with a crease across the crown that never fully released, permanent, like the hat had developed a personal grudge. Now I stuff the inside with a balled up t shirt to hold its shape and let it ride on top of everything else in the bag, which looks slightly deranged at airport security but has worked every time since.

I’ll say the gamble part outright.

The smaller, higher brim version is the one I actually reach for, but it’s not a universal win, on the wrong face it reads a little bit like a costume, a little bit like you’re doing a bit. The oversized one is safer for more people and I still think it’s a bit much for me personally.

Neither one of us has changed the other’s mind, and at this point I’ve stopped expecting to. I’ve just started owning two.
