Every stylist I know is currently in agreement about the brown tiered skirt, except for one client of mine who thinks the whole category is a costume for a woman who wants to seem breezy and instead ends up sweating on a train platform. I mostly disagree with her. Mostly.
The rest of us have been buying these on repeat for about three seasons now, and the reason is boring but true, brown works under a coat in a way black never quite does, it doesn’t read like you’re going to a funeral, it reads like you got dressed on purpose. I own two. I measured the hem drop on both because the last one I bought online claimed midi and landed four inches below my knee, which is not a midi, that’s a length with a marketing problem.

Here’s where the disagreement actually lives, and it’s not really about the color. It’s about the tiers. Half the appeal is the swish, the way three layers of fabric move when you walk instead of just hanging there being polite. My holdout client hates that exact motion, says it makes her feel like she’s wearing a costume from a play about a woman who runs a vineyard. I’ve stood next to her while she walked in one and, fine, there was a moment where I saw it. It’s a lot of fabric moving at once. If you’ve spent your whole life being told to minimize, three tiers of anything can feel like a dare.
Layering it under a coat is where most of these either earn their keep or get shoved to the back of the closet. The good ones sit flat enough at the waist that a sweater tucks in without adding a second waistband you can feel digging in by hour four.

The bad one I owned in 2021 bunched right at the hip under a wool coat, so by the time I got off the train I looked like I was smuggling a throw pillow. That skirt got returned within the week, and I don’t feel bad about it.
The heat thing is real too, three layers of fabric plus tights plus a coat is a lot of insulation for a fifteen minute train ride, and I’ve arrived places looking flushed for reasons that had nothing to do with being late.
The length matters more than the color, honestly. A hem that hits mid calf makes stairs a small negotiation every single time. One that stops just below the knee, tiers and all, moves like it’s supposed to and doesn’t require you to hike anything up before you sit down.
I’d still buy one this season. I’d just try it on with a coat over it before deciding, standing still doesn’t tell you anything, walking a full block does.
