I spent most of the 2000s convinced chocolate brown was a color for other people, women with better hair and more patience for dry cleaning, and I want to formally concede that I was wrong about that for close to fifteen years for no good reason at all. I think I saw one bad photo of myself in a brown turtleneck at a family thing in 2004 and let it decide the whole category for me. That’s on me, not the color.
So the mini dress version of this took some convincing, and I’ll admit I bought two before I found one that actually behaved. The first came out of the bag looking like something you’d wear to apologize to a landlord, more gray than brown, the kind of shade that reads fine under store lighting and then goes muddy the second you’re standing in your own kitchen. That’s the thing nobody warns you about with this color, it splits hard between warm and flat, and you genuinely cannot tell which one you’ve got until you’re home with the tags off and no returns window left.

The one that earned its place did the opposite, it looked richer by the second wear, like a good coffee instead of a wet paper bag, and that’s the whole test as far as I’m concerned.

Best doesn’t mean flattering in a fitting room mirror under flattering lighting designed to sell you things. Best means it still looks like that coffee at six in the evening after you’ve sat in it, eaten something with sauce, and forgotten it’s not black.
My sister borrowed one for a dinner and texted me a single photo with no caption, which from her is high praise, she’s not a woman who wastes words on things she doesn’t like.
I’ll say plainly that the shorter, more fitted ones in this shade are a gamble, they’re gorgeous on someone with the frame and the nerve for it and slightly costume like on the rest of us, myself included some days. I own one I still haven’t worn twice.
What’s held up, the one I’d actually call the best of the bunch, is the slightly looser cut that doesn’t ask you to hold your stomach in through an entire dinner, in a brown warm enough to read as intentional rather than accidental. I’ve worn a version of this exact shade and cut in three different decades now if you count the one from 2004 I’m not proud of, and I can tell you the color finally caught up to the good idea. It just took me an embarrassingly long time to stop blaming brown for something a bad turtleneck did on its own.
