I bought a chocolate brown mini skirt in March telling myself it would replace my black one in rotation, and it has been worn exactly twice since March. My brother would call that a bad investment. I call it a skirt I think about more than the ones I actually reach for, which is its own kind of value even if the math doesn’t work.
That’s the actual argument I keep having with myself about this whole category. Half of the appeal is imagining a version of my week where I’m the kind of person who wears a structured mini skirt to run errands, and the other half is the truth, which is that these live in the closet most days and come out for the four or five occasions a year that call for actually trying. I don’t think that’s a failure.

I think it’s just what the piece is for, and pretending otherwise is how you end up disappointed in something that was never going to be a Tuesday item.
The waistband is the thing that decides whether I keep a skirt like this past the first wear. I had one that felt fine standing in the dressing room and turned into a genuine problem forty minutes into a lunch that involved bread, twice. Sitting down is the real test, not walking around a store. The better one I own now has enough give that I forgot I was wearing it through an entire meal, which from me is close to a five star review because I notice these things constantly.
Bending down is where a lot of minis quietly fail and nobody warns you.

I dropped my keys outside a coffee shop in the good one and did the careful bend, knees together, dignity mostly intact. In the cheaper one I tried first, that same move was not an option, so I know exactly which drawer that one lives in now.
Wind is its own category of problem and I’m not going to pretend otherwise. There’s a version of this skirt in my closet that I love from the front and have learned to manage very specifically outdoors, which is a nice way of saying I check the forecast before I wear it. That’s the gamble pick, honestly. It looks better than anything else I own in this color and it requires actual strategy to wear, and I’d rather say that outright than let someone find out on a windy platform.
So no, I don’t wear this as often as I meant to when I bought it. But the two times a year I do, nothing else in that drawer does the job the same way, and that’s apparently enough reason to keep buying more of them.
