I bought this frill dress in March telling myself it was a “date night dress,” which is a lie I tell every single frill dress I own, because the actual number of date nights I have in a month is roughly one, and the number of frill dresses in my closet claiming that job is currently five. My mom pointed this out over the phone, something like “you have a whole sorority formal in there and you go on one date a month,” and she’s not wrong, but she also doesn’t understand the math, which is that cost per wear doesn’t care about intention, it cares about outcomes.
So here’s the actual outcome. Eighteen dollars, thrifted, the corner store I’ve claimed as mine, and I have worn it four times since March. Once on an actual date, twice to dinners with friends I dressed up for on a whim, once to a work thing I definitely underdressed for on purpose because the alternative was a blazer I hate. That’s four dollars fifty a wear.

I did that math twice because the first time I got eighteen dollars a wear and nearly had a breakdown before I remembered division is not my strong suit before ten a.m.
The real test, though, the one nobody warns you about, is sitting across a table for two hours in it. This is where half these dresses fall apart, literally in one case, a seam thing I won’t relive. The frill on this one sits at the shoulder, not the waist, which sounds like a small detail until you’re two hours into a dinner and realize a waist frill has been silently annoying you the whole time, bunching every time you lean forward to steal a fry. Shoulder frill, zero problems. I noticed nothing, which for a dress is the highest compliment I have.

Shoes were a whole separate crisis.

I left the house in heels, got as far as the driveway, came back in for flats, because two hours at a table means your feet are the one part of you not on display, so why suffer. Threw a denim jacket over it walking there because it was sixty two degrees and I have learned the hard way that “romantic” and “hypothermic” are not the same mood. Jacket came off the second we sat down. That’s the whole system, works every time.
I’ll be honest, this dress is a gamble for anyone who isn’t already fine with a little volume up top, it reads sweet, almost young, and on the wrong night that’s the wrong note entirely. I know that. I wore it anyway because the math worked and honestly the shoulders did the heavy lifting. Ledger update, good column, buy number six for the month, and I’m not even mad about the other five.
