“Smart but sunny” is a dress code invented by someone who has never had to get dressed for an actual event, and I said so at a planning meeting for a client’s garden party in May, right before I lost the argument I’d been winning for about six months. My position was that gold reads as evening wear no matter what time the invitation says, and any maxi dress in that color is going to look like it wandered off from a cocktail hour. The client’s aunt, who has apparently been attending garden parties since before I was born, pulled up a photo on her phone of herself in a pale gold column dress at a 2 p.m. lawn party, flats on, sun out, looking completely correct. Concrete counterexample, case closed, I conceded on the spot. Most of the office has come around since. My one holdout still thinks gold before six is a costume, and honestly I respect the consistency even though she’s wrong.

What actually decides it isn’t the hour, it’s the finish. The dresses that work in daylight have a matte, almost dusty gold to them, something closer to a wheat field than a trophy. The ones that shimmer like they’re auditioning for a chandelier belong at 8 p.m. under actual chandeliers, and I own one of those, labeled true to size, measured a solid two inches tight through the hip on a garment claiming to be a 14, wore it once to a daytime thing and spent four hours looking like I’d been gift wrapped for the wrong occasion.

Pockets are where this category falls apart completely. Out of the six gold maxis currently living in my closet, exactly one has real pockets, and it’s become the default not because it’s the prettiest but because I don’t want to be a woman holding her own phone like a clutch for four hours at an outdoor event with nowhere to set it down. The other five, my phone lived in a friend’s bag, in a bush by the drinks table for a photo, and once, memorably, tucked into the waistband, which is a decision you only make once.

Length is its own daily negotiation. A true floor length maxi is gorgeous standing still and a liability the second there’s an escalator, a curb, or grass that got rained on the night before. I’ve hemmed one dress specifically for garden party height, ankle skimming, because I got tired of holding fabric in one fist like I was fording a river.

Buy the daylight gold, skip the one that photographs like an award show. Save that one for the award show.
