I had a whole argument with myself about a green a line skirt back in March that never actually got settled, because Nashville decided the argument for me. I’d found a listing at like eleven at night, olive colored, secondhand, the kind of green that reads more like a forest than a St. Patrick’s Day mistake, and I was fully prepared to defend buying it as a “transitional piece for spring.” Then two days later it snowed, actual snow, in a month where I’d already packed my coats away out of pure optimism, and the skirt just sat there being correct about nothing while I stood in front of the closet in leggings under jeans like an idiot. The debate about whether it was a spring skirt or a fall skirt didn’t get resolved, the weather just made it irrelevant, and I wore it exactly once before summer showed up and made a different argument entirely.

I will say, once it’s actually skirt weather, this is one of the pieces I reach for without the usual fifteen minutes of standing there negotiating with myself. Green in that deeper, mossier shade does something a black skirt just doesn’t, it makes a plain white top look like an outfit instead of an afterthought, and it’s shockingly forgiving with a chunky boot in a way I didn’t expect from something A line.

What it does not do is play nice with anything else that’s trying to be a statement, I learned this wearing it with a patterned blouse to a wedding shower and spending the entire event looking like a rental car decal.

Washing it was its own small crisis. I threw it in cold with everything else the first time, pure laziness, and it came out fine, not faded, not weird, which honestly surprised me because I fully expected to open the machine and find something closer to sage than forest. Second wash I got cocky and did warm water and it survived that too, though I wouldn’t push my luck a third time, I’ve started treating it like it’s got exactly one more chance before I ruin it out of overconfidence.

The gamble here, and I’ll say it plainly, is the exact shade. This green is not for everyone, it reads gorgeous against warm undertones and slightly funeral adjacent on others, a friend tried mine on and looked like she was headed to testify against someone. I still think it’s worth the risk, but I’m not going to pretend it’s the safe universal pick the way a navy skirt would be. It’s a specific green for a specific person, in a specific three week window before the weather makes another decision I didn’t ask it to make.
