My neighbor Dana and I have had the same argument about a green polo since May, and it never got resolved so much as it got rained out. She’s a tuck it in person, full stop, no exceptions, she thinks an untucked polo looks like you’re about to ask someone if they’ve considered a home warranty. I think tucking a polo in makes me look like I’m supervising a golf tournament I wasn’t invited to. We went back and forth on this for an entire month of actual arguing, and then it just got humid and disgusting outside and both of us started wearing the thing untucked and slightly damp and neither of us mentioned it again. That’s the whole resolution. Chicago in July doesn’t care about your hem opinions.

Here’s the thing about a green polo specifically, and I say this as someone who owns four now, which is three more than any reasonable person needs: it’s the one polo color that doesn’t immediately read as “I gave up.” White gets gray at the collar in a week. Navy disappears into every other navy thing you own. Green, a real green, not the sad sage that every brand calls “olive” this year, actually looks like a decision. I wore one to a Sunday farmers market and a woman selling honey told me she liked my shirt, and I don’t think anyone has ever complimented a polo shirt in the history of polo shirts, so that told me something.

The ones I reach for without thinking are the ones with a collar that doesn’t try to stand up and salute you all day, it just sits there behaved, and that’s genuinely it, that’s the whole secret, nobody needs to know more about the fabric than that.

The ones that sit in my closet like a rebuke are the boxy ones, the cropped ones that hit at a length where you either need a very specific high waisted pant or you’re accidentally showing your whole stomach at brunch. I bought one of those on a whim, wore it once with jeans that were apparently the wrong jeans, and a friend at the table asked if I’d “recently gotten into tennis.” I have never played tennis.

I own zero tennis rackets. That shirt now lives in the donate pile, unclaimed, judged.

What actually works: white sneakers, a stiff pair of trousers, or, if you’re feeling like a person who has her life together, tucked into a midi skirt with the collar popped, which Dana will tell you is correct and I will tell you is a personal choice bordering on a costume. What doesn’t work is pairing it with anything else preppy, another collar, another stripe, you end up looking like a uniform nobody assigned you.

I’ll say the gamble part plainly: a bright kelly green polo is not for everyone, it’s for someone who already likes being looked at a little. If that’s not you, fine, get the darker green. I won’t fight you on it. I fought Dana on the hem all summer and the weather settled it for us anyway.
