I spent three years telling anyone who’d listen that green sneakers were a costume, not a shoe, the kind of thing you buy for one photo and then quietly return. I was wrong about that and I’m just going to say it plainly instead of waiting for someone to argue me out of it, because nobody had to, I got there on my own after seeing a pair on my sister at a backyard thing in June and spending the rest of the party staring at her feet instead of the actual conversation.

So now I’m the one refreshing three resale searches a day looking for a specific shade, which, if you know me, checks out, I just usually do this for handbags. The group chat had six pairs on the table by Tuesday night and it got ugly in a friendly way. One camp wanted the sage, quiet, office appropriate, disappears into a pair of jeans. The other camp wanted the loud almost neon one, the kind you buy knowing full well it’s going to end up worn twice and then explained to your mother.

I sat in the middle refreshing a listing for a third pair nobody else even liked, at 11pm, like that was a normal hour to be doing that.

Here’s the thing nobody warns you about with white sneakers, and part of why this whole green detour happened in the first place, mine lasted exactly nine days before the toe box looked like it had personally walked through a construction site, which, in my defense, it kind of had. Green hides that. Not all of it, but enough that I stopped doing the thing where I check my shoes before I sit down anywhere.

The shade thing is real though and I will not pretend otherwise. The photo on my phone showed a clean, deep forest color, the kind that reads expensive. Outside, in actual daylight, on actual pavement, it leaned about two shades brighter and slightly more olive, not a bad color, just not the one I thought I was buying, and I’ve now learned to check listing photos taken outdoors before I check anything else, which took me embarrassingly long to figure out given how much time I spend authenticating everything else I own down to the stitch count.

The gamble pick, and I’ll own that it’s a gamble, is the brighter one, the one that looked slightly unhinged in the group chat photos. It’s not for everyone. It’s for someone who wants their feet to start a conversation before they’ve said anything. I wore it once to run errands and got asked about it twice before I even got to the register, which either means it works or means I looked like I was in a uniform for a job that doesn’t exist. Both feel true.
