I bought a halter neck swimsuit for a trip to Tulum three years ago because a girl on my feed wore one on a boat and looked like she owned the boat. I do not own a boat. I own a Groupon for a snorkeling tour and a neck that, after four hours of that tie sitting behind it, felt like it had been in a small, polite fight. That’s the thing nobody tells you about the halter neck. It’s the most flattering shape in the water and the most punishing shape out of it, and it takes about two hours of actual sun for you to find out which one you’re getting that day.
The straps are the whole negotiation.
Too thin and you’re retying it every time you sit up from a float, which I have done in front of strangers, adjusting my own swimsuit like I was defusing something. Too thick and it stops looking like a swimsuit and starts looking like a sports bra that wandered off from the rest of its outfit. There’s a window, maybe an inch of strap width, where it actually works, and most brands miss it in one direction or the other, usually the cheap one.
Here’s where it gets messy, because this is a fight I’ve been having with my sister for about six summers now and we have never once resolved it. She thinks any halter tie that goes around the neck instead of clasping is a liability, full stop, doesn’t matter how good the fabric is, she’s spent one paranoid vacation checking her reflection in restaurant windows and she’s out.

I think that’s exactly the point, that it’s supposed to move a little, that a swimsuit that fits like scaffolding isn’t relaxing to wear, it’s a structural project. We surfaced this again over a bag of chips at a pool bar in June and got nowhere, same as always.
What actually matters more than the tie is the suitcase. A halter suit that comes out looking like a napkin someone balled up and shoved in a shoe is not a good suit, no matter how it photographed on the model. The ones worth buying come out of a bag with maybe one crease that shakes out in the time it takes to walk from the room to the water. The ones that don’t, you’re wearing wrinkled for the first hour of every single vacation day, which nobody plans for and everybody experiences.
And I’ll say the honest part. If your chest is doing a lot of work already, the halter can pull in a way that turns “supportive” into “I would like to sit down now.” That’s not every body, that’s a specific one, and if that’s you, this cut is a gamble worth trying on before it’s a gamble worth buying.
