Refreshed the app at 11:47pm on a Tuesday, which is apparently the exact hour a specific reseller in Ohio decides she’s done wearing something and lists it, I have a whole theory about her, I’ve never met her. Cognac corduroy shift dress, brass buttons, tags cut but never worn based on the pile, still standing up in the listing photos like it hadn’t met a single chair yet. FOUND IT before I’d even scrolled to the price, which is always how it goes, the joy comes first and the math comes second and by the time the math shows up you’ve already told yourself a story about how this changes everything.

Here’s the thing about cord as a fabric though, and I say this as someone who has bought four of these dresses in eighteen months chasing a very specific feeling. It has a sound. A soft corduroy scrape when you walk, whoosh whoosh, like the dress is narrating your steps, and the first three or four wears that sound is loud and the pile is thick and it looks a little stiff in a way that photographs great.

Then the pile starts flattening wherever your body actually moves, hips, the backs of your knees if it’s long enough, and it goes from looking like a dress to looking like a dress you own, which some people hate and I think is the whole point.

The actual argument I have, mostly with myself, isn’t about the dress at all. It’s about whether I’m buying to wear something or buying to win it. I’ve got two of these cord dresses that got worn exactly once, for the photo, for the proof that I found them, and then hung there while I moved on to hunting the next thing. And I’ve got one, a rust colored a-line I got off a resale app for eleven dollars because nobody else was searching “corduroy dress” at 7am on a Sunday like a maniac, that I’ve worn so many times the cord’s gone almost suede soft at the hem. Same fabric, same category, completely different relationship, and the difference wasn’t the dress, it was whether I was the person who needed the win or the person who needed the outfit.

My friend Maren texted me a listing for a boxy cropped cord dress last month, structured, almost stiff on purpose, and it’s a gamble of a shape, it looks incredible on her and slightly like a filing cabinet on me, so I’m not pretending that one’s for everybody.

You’re not going to keep showing me the good stuff for eleven dollars forever, algorithm, I know that. But until you stop, I’m buying for the wear, not the win, mostly, some weeks.
