Fourteen days out from a work trip to Naples, Florida, and I’m standing in my own bedroom holding a gold maxi skirt up to the mirror wondering if I’ve finally lost the plot or found the one thing that makes an airport look chic instead of like I gave up somewhere around security. I sell swimwear, not skirts, so this isn’t my usual territory, but the shop floor has taught me one thing that applies everywhere: nobody agrees on shine until they’re standing under the actual lights that matter, and gold does something under bad lighting that no other color does, it either glows or it turns into a foil balloon situation, and there’s no middle ground.

One of us swears by the skirt with the higher slit and the softer, almost brushed gold, thinks it’s the only version that survives a full day without looking like a costume. Another one of us wants the full liquid shine, the one that catches every light in a restaurant and honestly a few it shouldn’t, and thinks the muted version is just a beige skirt wearing a gold nametag. This argument has been going on for weeks and neither side has budged, which tells you the category itself is split down the middle before you even get to sizing.

The one I was sure would win, walking in, was a floor length version with a slit up to nowhere, all drama, the kind of thing that looks incredible standing still in a doorway.

It did not survive an actual day.

Getting in and out of a car, walking to catch a cab, going up stairs at a hotel, it required a level of managing I don’t have the patience for on vacation, and I’ve stood behind a fitting room curtain enough times to know when something photographs well and lives badly.

The one that actually surprised me was a shorter, ankle grazing cut I almost skipped past because it looked plain on the hanger. Turns out that’s the whole trick, the shorter hem does the walking for you, no gathering fabric at every curb, no near miss on an escalator, and it still catches light the second you move under it. Nobody expects a hem to be the hero of the outfit, but here we are.

The daytime question is real, though, and I won’t pretend it isn’t. Full shine, head to toe gold, at 11am in direct sun is A LOT, and I’ve seen a customer’s face do the exact thing mine did the first time I tried it, somewhere between delighted and slightly blinded. This one’s a gamble. It suits someone who wants to be looked at, not someone hoping to blend into brunch, and if that’s not you, that’s completely fine, that’s most of us most days.
