Four days until the flight and I’m standing in my bathroom trying to figure out which headband survived last summer and which one is currently living under the passenger seat of my car, because that’s where they go, they don’t get thrown out, they just relocate without telling me.

I counted this month, actually counted, and a single terry cloth headband went missing three separate times. Once in a beach bag, once genuinely inside a different headband like some kind of nesting doll situation I don’t want to explain, and once it just reappeared on my dresser like it had been on vacation of its own. That’s not a design flaw, that’s just what owning more than one headband does to a person. You stop being able to track inventory.

There was a real argument in the shop about the thick padded kind versus the thin knotted kind, and I mean a real one, my coworker swearing the padded ones dig into her head after twenty minutes on the floor, me insisting mine never does that.

She settled it by putting mine on for a full shift and coming back at closing with an actual dent above her ear. Concrete counterexample, case closed, I lost that one fair and square. Most of us switched to the thinner knotted style after that, though one holdout still wears the padded ones and just takes hers off every hour like it’s a scheduled break, which honestly sounds exhausting but she says it’s worth it for how it looks with her hair pushed back.

The terry cloth one is the workhorse, it survives sunscreen, sweat, a wash on hot without shrinking into a doll size accessory, and it looks the same on day six of a trip as it does on day one, which is more than I can say for most of what’s in my suitcase by then.

The gamble is the wide silk one, the kind that photographs beautifully and slides straight off the second you actually move your head. I’ve watched three different customers buy it convinced this time will be different. It won’t be.

It’s gorgeous sitting still. It is not built for a body that walks, bends, or exists past a photo. I still own one. I still wear it knowing this. That’s on me.

CALLED ONE OF THESE “RESORT EXCLUSIVE” AND CHARGED TWENTY DOLLARS MORE FOR WHAT WAS LITERALLY THE SAME KNOT AS THE ONE FOLDED IN MY GLOVE COMPARTMENT RIGHT NOW, and I will be annoyed about that specific twenty dollars until the day I die.

So no, we never fully agreed on which one wins. But at least one of us learned it the hard way, with a dent to prove it.
