Everyone treats a green tote like it’s a punchline, a “fun pop of color” for someone who’s already decided her whole personality is quirky, and I’m tired of it. Nobody in my group chats defends the position. I’ve asked. It’s just an assumption sitting there unchallenged, that green is a bag you wear once to make a point and then leave in the closet feeling embarrassed about, next to the fascinator from someone’s wedding.

Which is insane, because empty, a lot of these bags read as almost nothing, a flat khaki or sage rectangle that could pass for beige in bad light. It’s only once you actually load it up, laptop, the gym stuff you swore you’d use at lunch, a wallet that’s really a shoebox of receipts, that the color does anything at all.

Stuffed to the seams, a bag that looked like a sad piece of lettuce on the shelf suddenly reads as an actual decision. I had a client last spring who’d been handed the “flattering neutral” tote by every stylist before me, and flattering for what occasion exactly, is the question nobody asked her either. She switched to a bottle green one for work and got stopped in an elevator about it. That’s not styling magic. That’s just what happens when you stop treating a color like a liability.

I measured the strap drop on two totes from the same brand because their sizing claims never survive contact with a tape measure, and sure enough, one was listed at eleven inches, actual number nine and a half, which is the difference between hanging comfortably off a shoulder and living permanently in the crook of your elbow like a cast. I was right not to trust it. I’m never not going to check now.

Not every green here earns real estate in a size 14 wardrobe. A forest green canvas tote with a boxy structure looks incredible on the right person, someone tall, someone who wears mostly black and lets the bag do the talking. On me it read like I was smuggling a filing cabinet.

That’s the gamble pick. I’d still buy it for someone specific, just not for everyone reading this.

What actually goes with green, and this took me embarrassingly long to work out, is anything already neutral and slightly boring, camel coats, gray sweatpants, white sneakers that have seen things. What doesn’t work is putting it next to another loud color and hoping for the best, I tried olive with a mustard coat once and looked like a very committed hiking instructor.

The crush pick in my closet right now is a bright, almost traffic cone green, and I’ll be honest, I don’t know if I still love it in six months or if it’s a phase. The dark green one, though, I’ve reached for it every week since March. That’s the real thing. The rest is still auditioning.
