Half of us think a denim short skirt is the last honest piece of clothing left in a work wardrobe, no blazer to hide behind, no fabric weight doing you a favor on a video call. The other half think it’s a liability disguised as a warm weather solution, and I say this as someone who built an actual pro and con list for one on my phone during a client call I was only half listening to.
Here’s what nobody tells you before you buy one. It rides up. Not dramatically, not in a way anyone else notices, but enough that you develop a small, private hand motion, a tug at the hem, the kind of thing you do walking from your desk to the printer without registering you’re doing it. I do it.

The woman two desks over does it. We’ve never discussed it, but I’ve watched her do it, and I think we both know.
The static is the part I wasn’t ready for. Cotton isn’t supposed to cling like that, but pair it with any kind of tights once the office air conditioning turns aggressive in October and you’re basically wearing a magnet. I stood in a bathroom stall once with a safety pin trying to tack my slip to the inside hem because static electricity had decided we were one garment now, and I lost that argument.

What I didn’t expect was how much better the denim gets after a few washes, which feels backwards for anything else in my closet. The first wear, it’s stiff, a little unwilling to move with you when you sit down for a nine hour day. By wash five it’s soft in the exact places that matter, and the hem starts to fray in that lived in way that reads as a decision instead of neglect, at least for a while. Past a certain point the fraying stops being charming and starts being a hole, and there’s no clean line for when that switch happens, it just does, usually while you’re wearing it to something important.

On paper this is a smart warm weather purchase, cost per wear across three casual Fridays and one very ill advised first date. In reality I bought mine because it was ninety four degrees and I’d had enough of pants, and the spreadsheet had nothing to do with it.
I’ll say the honest part now. This isn’t for everyone’s Tuesday. If your job has you sitting through six hours of back to back meetings, a short denim skirt is a genuine gamble, you’ll be doing the hem tug in front of your manager and hoping she’s looking at her laptop. For a weekend, for anyone who isn’t tethered to a conference table, it’s one of the better trades in a summer closet. I just wouldn’t pretend it’s neutral. Nothing with a hem this short ever is.
