Nineteen dollars at the place on the corner, the one with the Tuesday restock, and I almost didn’t buy them because wide leg black pants felt like a thing everyone already owned except me. Turns out everyone in my life does own a pair, and everyone agrees on almost everything about them except my mom, who thinks they make me look like I’m perpetually on my way to serve someone a subpoena. She’s outvoted. I’m including her opinion anyway because it’s the one that sticks in my head every single time I put them on.
Everybody else is right about the layering, though. A fitted turtleneck tucked in is basically cheating, it works every time, and a cropped sweater works almost as well as long as the crop point doesn’t land at the exact width point of the pants, because then you get a silhouette that reads less “chic” and more “tent with legs.” That took me two tries to figure out and one photo my coworker sent me without asking.

The waistband is where the real test happens. Mine sits high, elastic in the back panel only, and it survived a burrito the size of a forearm without me having to do the secret unbutton under the table. That’s not nothing. I’ve owned trousers that made me plan my lunch order around them, which is an insane way to live, and I said so out loud at the table and nobody disagreed.
Sitting down is the other moment nobody warns you about. Wide leg either falls open into this nice draped line when you sit, or it bunches at the knee like a pool of fabric that wants attention.

Mine do the first thing, mostly, except on the one pair I bought for twelve dollars that I keep meaning to return to the donation bin and never do because twelve dollars, come on.
Hem length is where I lost an actual argument with myself for a week. Full break, shoe basically invisible, feels expensive and slightly Parisian. Cropped to the ankle, shoe fully visible, feels more like an outfit decision than an accident. I own one of each now because I couldn’t commit, and that’s buy five and six for the month, which either means I’ve solved this category or I have a problem, and I’m choosing not to look too closely at which.
Per wear, the nineteen dollar pair is down to around eighty cents and dropping every week, which is the kind of math that makes me insufferable at dinner, I know. The twelve dollar pair, less good, I don’t wear them enough to make the number embarrassing in a good way. My mom’s holdout opinion stands, unconvinced, mildly disapproving, and completely irrelevant to how often I reach for these instead of anything else in that drawer.
