My brother Sam thinks a denim dress is a lazy costume, something you throw on when you can’t decide between jeans and a dress so you just wear both at once. I think he’s wrong, but we never actually settled it, because the night I bought mine hit ninety four degrees at seven p.m. and the entire debate became pointless. Nobody’s arguing about structure when it’s that hot. You put on the thing that isn’t going to weld itself to your back and you leave.

That’s the case for it, honestly. On a warm night denim breathes in a way a lot of “going out” fabric doesn’t, and a dress that’s had a few washes moves like a soft shirt instead of a stiff sandwich board.

Mine’s on wash nine or ten, I stopped counting around six, and it’s gone from something that creaked a little at the hips to something that just moves with me. That’s the whole appeal. It looks considered without doing any of the sitting up straight a going out dress usually demands.

The ironing dread is real though, I’m not going to pretend otherwise. Fresh out of the dryer this thing has the kind of wrinkles that look intentional from four feet away and completely feral up close, and I have stood over an ironing board at 8:40 for a 9:00 plan more than once, swearing at a hem that will not cooperate. First wash also did something unexpected, it shrank about half an inch across the chest and I spent one dinner breathing carefully until it stretched back out over the course of the night. Nobody noticed but me.

The actual test is always the walk home. Bars, a friend’s rooftop, whatever it is, the dress has to survive getting sat on a curb, leaned against a bar, danced in badly, and then walked eight blocks in flat shoes because the good shoes gave up an hour ago. Mine’s done all of that and come out fine, no crease that didn’t fall right back out, no weird bunching at the waist from a night of bad posture. That’s more than I can say for half the going out pieces in my closet.

I’ll say the honest thing, which is that this only works on a body that likes structure. If you want something that skims and forgives, this isn’t it, denim holds a shape and shows you exactly where you are that night, no negotiating. Sam still thinks it’s a hedge of an outfit. I think it’s the one thing in my closet that survives heat, a spill, and a long walk without asking me to think about it twice, and most nights that’s the only argument that actually matters.
