I own two gold slip dresses and they have taught me completely different lessons about my own body, my own tolerance for discomfort, and how much I’m willing to pay to feel like a specific kind of hot for four hours.

The first one, twelve dollars from the place on the corner, satin so thin you could floss with the straps, I nearly didn’t buy because the tag said “vintage” in that way that means “hemmed by whoever owned it before you, badly.” I wore it to a birthday thing in April, mirror check before I left, looked incredible, looked like I had it together in a way I genuinely did not. By hour three the slip had ridden up so much I spent the rest of the night doing that discreet downward tug women do at parties, the one where you pretend you’re adjusting your bracelet. Great for photos. Actively hostile to dancing.

The second one cost sixty two dollars, which felt like a personality crisis at the time, and I almost put it back twice.

It has a lining. An actual lining, like someone anticipated that a body might move in it. I wore it in October, checked the mirror once on the way out and never again all night, which is the whole review right there. Twenty two dollars a wear so far and I’m not done wearing it, so that number’s only going down, unlike the twelve dollar one which I’ve worn exactly twice because I don’t trust it past 9pm.

Here’s where I disagree with myself constantly: the cheap one photographs better. There’s something about thin, worn in satin that catches light in a way the structured one just doesn’t. So if the night is mostly for the pictures, mostly for the fifteen minutes right after you arrive, I’d almost tell you to take the gamble on the flimsy version.

If the night actually involves standing up, moving around, existing past the first round of drinks, pay for the lining. That’s the whole disagreement, and I have never fully resolved it, I just pick based on the venue now like it’s a weather forecast.

One honest caveat, gold is not neutral, it reads bridal on some people and costume on others depending on your undertone and honestly your general confidence that evening, and I know this because I have looked genuinely washed out in it once and incredible the next month in the exact same dress. I don’t have a fix for that, I just wanted to say it before you order one convinced it’s universally flattering, because it’s not, it’s a coin flip dressed up as a sure thing.

Good column for both, for the record. The twelve dollar one for what it did in ninety minutes, the sixty two dollar one for what it’s still doing eight wears in. Different jobs. Same drawer.
