Okay so beige trench coats are the one category where I genuinely thought this would be a quick post. Neutral coat, everyone owns one, done, next. Wrong. So wrong. I filmed the intro three times because I kept saying “it’s just a beige coat” and then immediately remembering the one I bought off a livestream that made me look like I was cosplaying a rental car.
We tested a handful this month and the whole thing almost broke down over sitting down.

Not walking, not the mirror check, sitting. One coat looked incredible standing up in my kitchen, properly editorial, and then I got in the car and the whole hem rode up around my hips like a life jacket had deployed. Same thing on the train, it bunched under the seatbelt in a way that looked fine on camera for exactly the two seconds before I sat down, which is not how most of a day actually goes.
The color thing is where it got personal though. I’m pretty warm toned and there’s a beige out there that makes me look like I’ve been ill, I’m not being dramatic, my own mother texted “are you feeling okay” from a photo I sent the group chat. That same coat on my roommate, who’s cooler toned, looked expensive and soft and like she’d done nothing at all to look that put together. Infuriating. So when people say beige is a safe neutral, sure, safe for who, exactly.
Here’s the part nobody agreed on.

There’s a longer one in the lineup, hits mid calf, and half of us think it’s the best silhouette of the bunch, properly grown up, looks amazing in a slow motion coat swish which I will admit I filmed four times. The other half think it’s a hazard the second you’re doing anything other than standing still and posing, stairs, subway doors, basically living. This fight has apparently been going since before I joined, and it resurfaced the second someone brought up how it does in an actual car seat, because it does not do great, it rides up weird and pools in your lap like a napkin.
I’ll be honest, one of my picks here is a gamble. It’s a much stiffer, structured one that photographs like a magazine cover and feels a little like wearing a door in person, that’s not for everyone, that’s for someone who wants the silhouette more than the comfort and knows it going in.
What I actually reach for is the one that survived the bus sprint, the car seatbelt, and did not turn me into a ghost in photos. Not the most dramatic pick. Correct one though.
