Okay so I ordered a gold sequin dress at 1am for a wedding that was, and I cannot stress this enough, a BACKYARD wedding, and I found that out approximately four days too late to fix it, so we’re already off to a great start with this category and my decision making.

Here’s the thing nobody tells you about these until the tags are off and you’re standing in your bathroom mirror under the world’s worst overhead light. The sequins photograph like a completely different dress than the one you’re wearing. On camera, phone flash, ring light, whatever, it flattens out and just glows, looks expensive, looks intentional. In person, in regular human lighting, you can actually see the backing fabric between the rows if you catch it wrong, and mine had this one panel near the hip that just refused to lay flat no matter what I did, so I spent the whole reception doing this weird sideways lean in every photo to hide it. Nobody noticed.

I noticed. That’s the whole deal with sequins, you become the only person aware of the flaw and it ruins nothing except your own peace of mind.

We do not agree on this one, by the way, and it only came up when I sent a photo to the chat and someone brought up the sound. Because that’s the detail that splits the room every single time, the actual noise these things make.

Walking, sitting, getting into a car, all of it comes with a little shimmery rustle that either sounds like a party or sounds like you’re wearing a wind chime, depending who you ask. One person in the group swears it’s the best part, says it makes an entrance before you even walk in. Another person says she wore hers to a dinner and could hear herself moving for three hours straight and it drove her actually insane. Both of those are correct, I think it just depends on your personality, honestly.

By the end of the night mine had survived a car ride, a sit down dinner, and one aggressive hug from someone’s aunt, and it still looked fine, no missing sequins, no snags, which genuinely surprised me because I expected to be finding loose sequins in my bag for a week.

I will say this one’s a gamble. If you’re someone who wants to disappear into a room, skip it, this dress is doing the opposite of that on purpose. But if you’ve got an event where blending in was never the plan anyway, it earns its spot, noise and all.
