I said for two years that a mule was an at home shoe, a walk to the mailbox shoe, and anyone wearing one to an actual office was going to be barefoot by 11am with the thing dangling off one finger like a tiny betrayal. My coworker settled that argument permanently by wearing the same pair of gold mules from a 9am all hands to a 6pm client dinner, no bandaids, no wincing, no secret sneakers in her tote bag. I checked. There were no secret sneakers. Most of us have conceded. One holdout still insists that particular pair was a fluke, a shoe that fit her foot and nobody else’s, and honestly, that might be true, but I’m not rearguing something I already lost.

Here’s what actually matters, and it’s the heel height, not the color. Anything over two inches and you’re negotiating with your own feet by 3pm, having the kind of internal conversation nobody should be having during a budget meeting. The ones that work sit low, almost stacked, so the whole shoe reads as put together without demanding anything back from you later in the day.

The gold itself is the part people get wrong. Under fluorescent office lighting, a cheap metallic finish goes flat and slightly greenish, like a party favor that wandered into a conference room by mistake. A good one keeps some warmth to it even under bad lighting, and in a flash photo, the kind someone takes at a work happy hour without asking, it doesn’t blow out into a white blob where your foot used to be.

That’s the whole test, honestly. Nine a.m. under bad office lights, five p.m. under a phone flash, same shoe, still looks intentional both times.

I will say the gamble part plainly. A mule with any shine to it is not a safe universal choice, it’s a choice for someone who already wears color and doesn’t flinch when a shoe gets noticed. On the wrong outfit it looks like a costume left over from something else. On the right one, paired with something plain and slightly boring on top, it’s the only interesting decision in the whole look, which is honestly the point.

I’ve eaten my own words on this one and I’m not thrilled about it. But a shoe that goes from a 9am all hands to a 6pm dinner without a single complaint from either your feet or the fluorescent lights has earned the argument, whether I wanted to give it up or not.
