Okay so gold sweaters. I bought my first one because I saw it under studio lights at a friend’s holiday shoot and it looked like actual liquid, and then I got it home and under my regular bedroom light it looked like a Party City costume for “sad angel.” That’s the whole category summed up honestly. It’s a lighting dependent purchase and nobody tells you that part.
The one I actually reach for now is a fine knit with just a thread of metallic running through it instead of going full lamé on the whole sweater, and it photographs almost as well but doesn’t scream at people on the subway. I wore it four times in ten days for various filming reasons and it started pilling under the arms by day seven, which, fine, expected, that’s just what happens when a metallic thread rubs against itself for a week straight. I did finally cave and buy a sweater shaver for it, a cheap one, ran it over the sleeves for maybe ninety seconds, and it took the fuzz down without eating the shine, which felt like a genuine victory in my apartment at eleven p.m. for reasons I can’t fully explain to you.

There’s a chunkier one, almost sweater vest energy but with sleeves, that I’m going to be honest about, it’s a passing crush.

I love it in photos, I love it in the mirror for the first twenty minutes, and then I’m hot, and it’s itchy in a spot on my neck that no other sweater has ever found, and it goes back in the drawer. That one’s a gamble pick, it suits maybe one specific person who runs cold and doesn’t mind a slightly costume-y shine, and if that’s not you, skip it.
We’ve actually got a standing thing on this in the group chat, it comes up every time someone posts a new gold sweater fit, half of us think metallic knits are supposed to look a little disco and if you’re trying to make one look “quiet luxury” you bought the wrong sweater, and the other half think the second one looks tarnished on day three and that’s a sign of a bad buy, not a personality. It never gets resolved. It resurfaced hard when my chunky one started dulling at the elbows after one gentle wash, one person in the chat said it looked “vintage,” one person said it looked “like it lost a fight,” and both of them were looking at the same photo.
Bottom line from actually living in these for a few weeks, the thinner metallic thread ones age fine and earn their spot, the full shine ones need a shaver on standby and a person who’s not precious about a little tarnish. I’m keeping both anyway. I just know which one I’m wearing on camera and which one I’m wearing to sit on my couch and regret nothing.
