Green sleeveless dresses are the one category where half of us think a dress without pockets is basically a costume, and the other half think pockets ruin the line and would rather carry a bag like an adult. I sit somewhere in the middle, mostly because my dad’s approach to any garment is “does it hold what you need it to hold” and I’ve absorbed that completely, but I’ll admit a good clean seam at the hip with nothing bulging out of it does look better in photos than my phone-shaped bulge ever will.
We tried a run of these through an actual Seattle stretch, which means one warm afternoon, one rainstorm, and one evening that dropped fifteen degrees the second the sun left, and that’s honestly the whole test right there. The one that came out ahead had real pockets, deep enough that my phone didn’t peek out the top, and I noticed because I kept patting my hip out of habit expecting nothing and finding my keys instead. That’s a bigger deal than it sounds. I spent a decade holding my phone in my hand at every outdoor thing because nothing had anywhere to put it, and my hand would get sweaty, and I’d almost drop it into a lake once at a barbecue that nobody has let me forget.

The one that let us down was gorgeous on the hanger and did nothing for the actual wearing of it. Armholes cut so high and tight that raising an arm to wave at someone across a parking lot felt like a small negotiation with the fabric. Sam, who never comments on my clothes, said I looked like I was doing a stretch before a race.

The gamble pick, and I’ll say straight up it’s a gamble, is a linen blend one that looks incredible on a warm day and turns into a light jacket situation the second the temperature drops, because it holds almost no warmth on its own. Great for noon, rough for the walk home at nine. If you run warm and you’re not walking far, it’s the best one here. If you get cold in a slightly air conditioned room, skip it or bring a layer, because it will not save you.
Green as a color has its own history for me, mostly bad, mostly involving a hunter green bridesmaid dress I wore once that made me look like I worked at a golf course, but a lot of these leaned olive or a deeper forest that reads more like a good jacket color than a costume color, and that’s the one thing that actually changed my mind on the category this time around. Buy the one with pockets if you’re choosing between two you like equally. Everything else is personal preference and how much you’re willing to negotiate with your own armholes.
