Okay so basically everyone on my radar has decided the green trench is THE fall layering piece, like every single person I follow has one in some shade of olive or moss or “forest” which is apparently a marketing word now, and I bought in immediately, no notes, sight unseen, the way I do everything. Sent a photo of mine to the group chat before I’d even zipped it up and got back a unanimous string of fire emojis except one person, who said, and I quote, “it looks like a hunting jacket for someone who’s never hunted,” and refused to elaborate further. I’ve thought about that sentence every day since.

Here’s the thing that almost nobody talks about with trenches, which is what’s happening underneath them. A thin tee or a fitted long sleeve, no problem, the coat closes, life is good. A chunky sweater is a different negotiation entirely.

Mine fits over a medium weight knit if I don’t zip it all the way and just let it hang open like I meant to do that, but the second I try to belt it over anything with real bulk I look like I’m smuggling a second person. Turtlenecks bunch at the collar in a way that shows through the coat’s lapel and it drives me a little bit insane, I’ve started tucking the turtleneck collar down before I put the coat on which is a whole extra step nobody warns you about.

The train test is where it gets real though. Underground platform, coat still on, sweater underneath, one stop later I am peeling that thing off like it personally wronged me, and if you’ve got a bag strap crossing your body it rides the coat up on one side the entire ride and there is no fixing it once it starts, you just live with the lopsided situation until you get off.

What it actually goes with, in my honest opinion after wearing mine into the ground for a month: a cream or white underneath makes the green look intentional instead of camo adjacent, and a black bootcut trouser under it is doing something I did NOT expect. What doesn’t work, and I will die on this, is pairing it with anything else in the olive or khaki family, I tried a green coat over a khaki sweater for a shoot and even my most forgiving friend in the chat sent back a single skull with no caption.

I’ll say the quiet part, this coat is a bit of a gamble if you run warm or you’re stacking heavy knits underneath, it’s built for a thinner layer world and it knows it. The one holdout in my chat might’ve had a point about the hunting jacket thing on the wrong body, but on the right one, in the right lighting, it’s the only fall out I care about right now.
