Okay so I still have the pair I bought at the airport in 2022 for forty one dollars because my flight got delayed and I decided that was a personality trait, and I still have the pair I bought last spring for a hundred and ten, and those two flats are basically the entire argument I have with myself about gold ballet flats, back and forth, every single time I put either one on.

The airport ones photograph incredible. Under bad terminal lighting, under my ring light, under literally any flash, they read like actual metal, like I stepped in a puddle of jewelry. The expensive ones look more like a muted champagne in photos, which sounds better and is somehow less exciting on camera, I was NOT expecting that outcome. So round one goes to the cheap pair, purely on vibes and pixels.

Then you have to actually walk in them, which is where the airport pair reveals itself as a war crime.

I wore them for one work event, four hours, and by hour two I was doing that thing where you walk on the sides of your feet like a crab because the balls of your feet have filed a formal complaint. The expensive pair I’ve worn to a wedding, two work days, and once on a six thousand step Target trip I didn’t plan on taking, and they held up every time, no blister diary, nothing. So round two, not close, the pricier ones win by a landslide.

Sent a photo of both side by side to the group chat asking which one to feature and got back one person saying “the shiny ones obviously” and one person saying “girl the shiny ones give you a limp by 3pm, we’ve discussed this,” which is genuinely the whole review in two texts.

Here’s my actual problem though, and I’ll admit it, the gold that looks the most gold in photos is basically never the gold that survives a day on your actual feet, it’s like the finish and the comfort are on completely different budgets and refuse to negotiate. If you’re buying these purely for content, for one outfit, one event, the loud cheap gold might be the better financial decision honestly, because you’re getting exactly what you’re paying for and then retiring them, no guilt.

But if you want the pair that’s still in your closet in a year instead of the donation pile by August, it’s the quieter gold, the one that looks slightly less “I found treasure” under office lights and slightly more “I have a job.” That’s the gamble part, some of you are going to see the muted pair and feel nothing, and that’s fair, they’re not for the person who wants maximum shine. They’re for the person who wants to still be wearing gold flats after the fourth wear instead of writing them off as a bit.
