I still have the black nylon backpack I bought in 2019 sitting in my closet like a monument to a decision I regret, and I still have the one I bought two years later that I’ve worn probably four hundred times, and putting those two next to each other is basically the whole review. The 2019 one looked incredible in the store. Structured, boxy, a laptop sleeve I was very proud of. I wore it eleven times. It sat on my shoulders like it was still on the hanger, and by the time I had a water bottle, a cardigan, and my actual laptop in there, it stood away from my back at a proud, ridiculous angle, like it was announcing itself. The other one, the one that actually won, looked kind of unremarkable in a way that offended me a little when I bought it.

No structure to speak of. And that turned out to be the entire point, because empty it weighs almost nothing, and full it just collapses against your back and becomes part of you instead of a separate object you’re negotiating with on the train.

That’s the fight, weight before and weight after. Everybody talks about how light a backpack is empty, in the store, holding it in one hand like that means anything. Nobody talks about what it does at 4pm on a Tuesday when it’s got a laptop, a charger, a paperback you’re not reading, a half eaten protein bar, and for some reason always one single glove. An empty bag telling you it’s lightweight is a bag lying to your face about its intentions.

I wear a backpack on days that have zero occasion attached to them. No meeting, no plan, just errands and the vague hope of getting a coffee somewhere decent. That’s the actual test of this category, not whether it photographs well on someone leaning against a wall.

It’s whether you’ll grab it on a day when you could easily be carrying nothing and you choose it anyway because it’s just easier than a tote sliding off your shoulder every four minutes.

One honest confession, there’s a pick I’m recommending here that is a genuine gamble, a smaller structured one that looks fantastic on a specific kind of person walking briskly somewhere important, and looks a little bit like a school project on me. I bought it anyway. I use it maybe twice a month, on days I want to look slightly more put together than I feel, and I will not pretend it earns its place the way the boring collapsible one does every single day without asking for credit.

The boxy 2019 one is still in my closet. I keep meaning to donate it. I haven’t. Some purchases you just have to sit with.
