Every single person I packed for Cabo this year said the burgundy bodycon was the smart pick. My sister said it. My roommate said it while literally borrowing it off my bed without asking. The group chat, unprompted, sent me the same one from three different stores like they’d formed a committee. One person, and I will get to her, thought this whole plan was insane.
Here’s the case for it, and it’s a good one.

A bodycon dress in a color that isn’t black photographs like you tried, without you actually having to try. Burgundy does something flattering under a sunset that I don’t fully understand and don’t need to, it just works, every single vacation photo from the last three years where I look like I have a tan I did not earn is me in some version of this dress. It packs down to nothing. It goes from lunch to dinner if you swap the sandals, which matters more than people admit, because nobody wants to change three times in a rental with one mirror and bad lighting.
The holdout was my coworker, who took one look at the dress hanging on my closet door before the trip and said, flatly, that bodycon and beach vacation don’t belong in the same sentence, that you sweat through a plane ride and a rental car and a walk from parking to the door, and by the time you’re actually at dinner the dress has spent six hours doing a job it was never built for. She’s not wrong about the sweat part. I will say that in her defense, unprompted, which I never do.

First night I wore it, I did the mirror check, turned sideways twice, decided I looked like a person who had her life together, which was a lie, but a convincing one.

Dinner was fine. Great, actually. By the walk back it had ridden up twice and I’d hiked it down in a doorway pretending to check my phone, which is its own kind of vacation memory now.
I’d still buy it again, that’s the honest part. It earns its spot for exactly one night, maybe two, the ones with a real dinner and real photos, and it should not be anyone’s only dress in the suitcase, that’s where people go wrong, they pack three of these thinking they’re being efficient and end up living in the one loose linen thing they almost left at home. It’s a gamble on the person, not the dress. If you run warm, if you’re doing more walking than sitting, you will be adjusting it in a doorway too, and you’ll still probably wear it again next year. I did.
