Nobody warns you about the gold dress until you’re already standing on a hotel balcony realizing your suitcase folded it in half for eleven hours and now it looks like a foil wrapper somebody smoothed out with their hands. That’s my whole complaint and I’m making it flatly because I don’t think anyone in my life has ever packed one of these correctly, not once, not me either, and yet everyone keeps buying them for the same trip photo without a single person addressing the crease situation beforehand.

Six days until my last flight and I still hadn’t decided if the high neck was doing me a favor or actively working against me once I got off the plane. On the hanger it looks like armor, which is part of the appeal, something about that neckline reads expensive even when it wasn’t. But out in actual heat, with actual humidity, that same structure turns into a collar that traps sweat right at your throat, and I had a woman in the shop describe it as “wearing a very glamorous oven mitt,” which I have not been able to unhear since.

The length is where this thing either earns its keep or ruins your night.

Ankle length looks incredible getting off a boat.

It looks considerably less incredible when you’re trying to climb back onto the boat, sand stuck to the hem, someone’s cocktail already dangerously close to it. I’d call the length a friend for the first hour of any evening and a real enemy by hour three, the same way heels are a friend in photos and a war crime by the time you’re walking back to the room.

Salt water and gold metallic dresses do not get along, full stop. I learned this the hard way on a trip where the ocean spray hit the hem during what I thought was a safe distance photo, and by day four that spot had gone slightly dull, like the fabric had aged faster than the rest of the dress just because of one moment near the water. Sunscreen residue does something similar if you’re not careful wiping your hands before you touch it, which nobody remembers to do at 4pm with a piña colada in hand.

Here’s my gamble admission, because I’d be lying if I said this suits everyone. If you run warm, or you hate anything near your neck when it’s ninety degrees out, this dress will fight you the entire trip and you will end up carrying it home unworn, which I have also done, more than once.

Still, on the one night it works, it properly works, foil creases and all, and that’s usually enough to make me pack it again anyway.
