Six days out from a trip to Key West and I still had two belted dresses sitting on the bed with the tags on, both bought for the same wedding, because I could not decide if a belted dress on vacation is a genius idea or a trap I set for myself every single time.
Here’s the argument that’s been going on in my head for actual years. One side of me thinks the belt is the whole point, it’s the difference between a dress that looks like a sack you fell into and a dress that looks like a decision. The other side of me remembers a rehearsal dinner in 2019 where I cinched a belt so aggressively after two mojitos that by the time the toasts started I looked like I’d been folded in half by a very determined stranger. Both of these things are true and I have never resolved it, I just live with it, the way you live with a roommate you disagree with about the thermostat.
What actually settled it this time wasn’t me winning the argument.

It was the weather. Ninety four degrees with humidity that made my hair do something biblical, and suddenly the whole debate about which belted dress was more “flattering” evaporated, because the only question left was which one wouldn’t make me want to peel it off by lunch.

The linen blend won by default, not by merit, which happens more in this category than anyone admits.
Had a woman in the shop last month buying a belted dress for a cruise, convinced the tie at the waist would come loose the second she sat down to eat, and she wasn’t wrong to worry, I’ve watched that exact thing happen at a work lunch, a slow unraveling nobody notices until the belt is basically a scarf on the floor. The ones worth owning have a buckle or a proper knot that holds through a car ride, a chair, and at least one plate of something with a sauce.
Length is where I’ll admit the gamble. Midi belted dresses photograph like a dream standing still and then turn into a hazard the second there’s a curb, a boat ramp, sand, anything with texture. I own one that is genuinely gorgeous and genuinely impossible past ten feet of walking, it’s a dress for a photo and a chair, not a dress for a day, and I bought it anyway knowing that, which tells you something about how this category gets me every time.
The short ones are the friend you don’t argue with, they survive the whole day and don’t ask anything of you after the second glass of wine. I’ve stopped pretending the belt makes every length behave the same, because it doesn’t, the belt just decides where the drama happens, not whether it happens at all.
