I had this argument with myself for about three weeks, whether black is the safe choice in this category or just the boring one, and I never actually settled it. What settled it was a heat wave, four days at ninety-one degrees where the office air conditioning gave up around 2pm, and the only wide leg jeans I could stand to wear were the lighter wash pair because the black ones felt like a personal decision to suffer. Argument over, not because I was wrong, just because nobody wins a debate against a weather system.
Before that week I would have told you black wins every time, no contest, because it does the thing where it looks intentional at nine and still looks intentional at five, which is not a small thing when your nine looks like a blazer and your five looks like a person who has been sitting in the same chair for eight hours eating lunch over her keyboard. The wide leg part does the actual work here, it skims instead of clings, so there’s no crease map across the front of your thighs by the time you’re in your third meeting. I noticed this specifically on a Wednesday that ran long, a client call that went forty minutes over with zero break, and I stood up afterward expecting the usual sitting damage and there wasn’t any.

That felt like it deserved applause. Nobody clapped. I clapped internally.

Here’s my actual complaint, and it’s a small one but it’s real: after a wash and a hang dry, one pair I own comes out slightly stiffer through the leg, not stiff like cardboard, just stiff enough that I need to wear them once before they remember how to move. I’ve stopped machine drying anything in this category entirely, learned that the hard way when a different pair shrank exactly enough at the hem to look intentional to nobody, least of all me.
The gamble pick, and I’ll say this plainly, is going properly wide, the kind of leg that reads as a full silhouette change rather than a relaxed trouser cut. On someone tall it looks like she planned her whole outfit around the pants. On me, five foot four in flats, it can occasionally look like the pants are wearing me. I still buy that cut because I like how it photographs on video calls, but I’m not going to pretend it’s a safe universal choice, because it isn’t, and anyone telling you every wide leg works on every body is selling you something.
So black wins by default most months, not because I resolved the argument in my head but because most months in an office aren’t ninety-one degrees. Circumstance decides more of this closet than I like to admit, which is a strange thing to learn from a pair of jeans, but there it is.
