Okay so this whole post almost didn’t happen because I got into it with my roommate about black vest tops and it turned out we weren’t even arguing about the shirt. We were arguing about how we live. She irons. I own an iron I have used maybe three times since moving to Austin and one of those times was to de-wrinkle a tablecloth that wasn’t even mine. So when she said a black vest top is “just easy,” what she meant was easy for a person who steams things before 9am. What I heard was a personal attack.
Because here’s the thing nobody tells you about black, it is not neutral, it is a COMMITMENT. It shows lint like it’s being paid to. It shows my cat’s fur like she’s autographing me on her way out the door. I wore one to film a get ready with me last week and had to stop three separate times to pick hair off my own shoulder on camera, which, great, very glamorous, very much what I signed up for when I chose this career.
The fit thing is real though and I will not pretend otherwise. Half these tops fit fine standing still and then you reach forward for literally anything, your bag, your coffee, a dropped phone, and the whole thing rides up and pulls weird across the back like it’s trying to escape. I nearly bought one from a haul because it looked incredible in the mirror, arms down, chin up, perfect lighting, and then I bent to tie my shoe in the fitting room and the shoulder seam did something I did not consent to. Did not buy it. Sent a photo to the chat first though, one person said “so cute” with zero context on the shoe incident, one person just sent the skull, and honestly the skull person had seen the full video.
The ones that actually made it into rotation are the ones cut a little wider through the shoulder, room to reach without the fabric fighting you, and I will say that once, then I’m done talking about construction because that’s not what this is about.
