I have owned a black wrap top since roughly 1994, and I want to be honest that it was never the same top, it was a rotating cast of nearly identical tops, each one bought because the last one finally gave up at the tie or the underarm seam, and each replacement announced with the same sentence to my sister, “found the black wrap top,” like I’d discovered a species. She has started answering “again” before I even finish the word “found,” which is not an argument, it’s just a bit we do now, and I don’t even mind it because she’s not wrong.
Here’s the actual quirk, the running joke around the office: every one of us does the mirror check at eight in the morning, decides we look competent and slightly in charge, and then does the second mirror check at five in the evening after the wrap has crept a half inch north and the tie has loosened itself into something closer to a suggestion. Nobody has ever fixed this. We’ve stopped trying to fix it and started just retying at the ladies’ room mirror around three like it’s a scheduled meeting, and somebody always says “wrap top hour” when they see someone else doing it, which is our version of a knowing look.
The debate that never quite becomes a fight is whether black is the smart choice or just the choice you make when you’ve run out of better ideas at eight in the morning.

I land firmly on smart, because I’ve watched myself reach for the black one on the mornings that mattered, the presentation, the funeral, the lunch with the client who once told me my cardigan was “a choice,” and it never once let me down, but I’ll admit that’s also a low bar, since a top that just sits there quietly and doesn’t crease is not exactly clearing a high jump.

The gamble in this pile is the one with the exaggerated hip tie, the kind that ends in a bow the size of a dinner roll, and I want to be clear that it looks fantastic on the one woman here who wears it with trousers and absolutely nothing else going on, and looks like a costume from a play about a struggling bakery on nearly everyone else, myself included, tested once, retired within the hour.

The one I’d actually tell you to buy is the plainest one in the group, the one that doesn’t announce itself, because I have a version of this exact shape from about 2006 still hanging in my closet as the control group, and the new one held its own against it, which for me is the only review that counts. Black isn’t boring here. Black is just the top that’s still working at five when everything else has quietly given up.
