I wore a green tank top to the office in July, layered a cardigan over it for the 9am meeting, and by 11 the cardigan was off, on, off, on, like I was doing wardrobe cardio. That’s the actual review, before we get into anything else. This top has a body temperature relationship with you that no other piece in my closet demands. Chicago office buildings run either like a meat locker or a sauna depending on which floor’s thermostat lost the argument that week, and this thing showed me every version of both.
The proper argument in our group chat started because one of us wore hers with absolutely nothing over it, straight into a client facing day, and called it “business casual, technically.” Half of us said fine, it’s a top, it has straps, it’s not a crime. The other half said the second someone from finance asks “is that appropriate,” you’ve lost, doesn’t matter who’s technically right.

Nobody backed down. It’s still unresolved. I personally think she was fine. I also think I would not have done it myself, which tells you everything about how confident I actually am in my own position.
The color is the other fight nobody saw coming. Online it photographed like a deep forest green, moody, a little serious, very “I have opinions in meetings.” In my actual kitchen light it reads almost olive, and under the fluorescent office lighting that makes everyone look faintly ill, it goes borderline khaki. I did not expect to need three different rooms to figure out what color I owned.

I stood in my bathroom at one point holding it up like I was appraising a painting.
Here’s my honest problem with this whole category, dressed up as a principle because that’s how I do things: a tank top gets treated like the lazy choice, the thing you throw on when you couldn’t be bothered, and I resent that a little, because a good one is doing actual work, temperature regulation, silhouette, the whole “am I allowed to show my arms today” negotiation we all pretend we’re not having every single morning.
I’ll say the quiet part. This top is a gamble for anyone whose office runs cold and stays cold, you will spend the day regretting it and borrowing a coworker’s blazer like a middle schooler who forgot gym clothes. For anyone whose building runs hot, or who layers well, it’s the best thing I bought this year, no notes.
I still don’t fully agree with my own group chat about the no cardigan thing. I’ve decided that’s fine. Some arguments you just keep having, and this top will keep giving you the reason to.
